Discussion:
c1 and c2 out of alignment

We've been trying to find out what's wrong with our daughter for 2 years
that has caused her to have a continuous headache. We've seen lots of
neurologists and other doctors. They all come up with nothing. But I
think that we have the first clue now. She has seen 3 other chiropractors
and is now seeing a 4th one. He has narrowed down a problem to the c1 and
c2 vertebrae being out of alignment. One is rotated to the left and the
other one to the right. When he adjusts these more toward alignment her 2
year headache pain reduces almost immediately by about 33%. This lasts a
few hours and seems to be lasting longer after each adjustment.

I thought I would mention this is something that others may have not
tried. Also, I would like to find out if anyone else has had experience
with the cervical spine being related to their headache.

thanks,
Bob

Bob,

Pobrecita! I can't imagine having a headache for two years. My sympathies.
I've been going to chiropractors for 30 years for chronic back and neck
problems. The neck rarely causes headache but when it does it's usually
pretty different from migraine. I have gone through bouts of muscle tension
headache from neck problems and a good chiropractor can definitely help with
that, but a good one should be able to take care of something like that in a
handful of visits, especially if she's young.

It's very hard to find a good chiropractor, but I'm wondering why it took
four different ones to figure this out since what all chiropractors do is
realign vertabrae. If she's getting relief I would think it'd be a good idea
to continue with chiropractic but I'm wondering if there may be something
else going on or if she might be a good candidate for getting steroid
injections. Has she seen a physiatrist - an MD who specializes in physical
medicine? Several people who post on this group have gotten the injections
in the neck to control headaches with varying degrees of success.

Probably not the answer to your question but I hope she can find some kind
of relief. Let us know how she's doing.

Bob. How has your daughter been doing? Have you found a good
chiropractor? Let us know.

I have curvature of the spine, and I am sure that figures in with my
headaches as well.

The chiropractic thing turned out to be a hint to us. I've outlined the
whole story at www.hindbrain.net/chiari.php

We now have a diagnosis by a really good neurosurgeon. Neurologists for
two years kept saying that she had migraines, but we believe that it is
actually a chiari 1 malformation and are planning to have the surgery
done.

Perhaps moot at this point (and wishing the best for your daughter)
but to answer the original question:
(For some reason, there is no reply option on that original
message... ?)

Yes, most definitely. I have problems between c5-c7, bone spurs, and
arthritis, and I get both migraines and cervicogenic (tension-type)
headaches from it (for 6 years now).

Oh, the pain... THE PAIN...

Have you looked also for hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome? EDS is
common with Chiari (or vice versa).

My daughter has had a headache straight for about 4 years now. We've
seen every doc imaginable. Last Oct we went to a great Neurologist
who said my daughter has two separate headaches. For all u doctors
reading sometimes the headache is real and Not psychological.
Although not an official diagnosis was made it helped to know someone
believed her. As I was watching a TV show in Nov the issue of an 8
year headache came up. We googled the cause found it to be real and
took it to our ENT. He studied 4 -5 of her CT's and realized her
Concha Bullosa in her middle turbinate had increased in size
significantly over the last 4 years. My belief is they grew due to a
toxic mold exposure we had had several years earlier. The surgeon
didnt make promises but did the surgery in Dec. She has improved
dramatically since then although not headache free def alleviated
other symptoms. Shooting pain in head, ear pain(drainage even with
ear tubes), throat pain, dizziness. When the doc went in he reduced
the CB, then went up to her septum which was covered in adhesions.
when the adhesions were cut pus came out. I believe the infection
used to spread up to her brain. I think her regular docs thought she
had a sinus infection , treated with antibiotics and kind of held it
at bay but it never got a 100% better. A month after surgery she was
able to return to school for the first time in almost 2 years.
Just this week we discovered the second headache is related to her C1
and C2 from a fall she took 4 years ago. We went to a physical
therapist to see if they could help and they discovered the parts to
be misaligned. They were able to recreate some of her symptoms. We
had addressed the neck 2 years prior but the chiro used a machine to
re align her and put her in a brace for a few hours. She was in such
distress I thought he was hurting her and we stopped going. The
Physical Therapist believes he was on the right track but should have
been doing adjustments manually and slowly. She has seen the PT twice
and already we see hope! YEAH! I pray your childs diagnosis is
correct and her pain is relieved!
Hope this helps someone.

I'm 26 and have had a non-stop migraine for nearly 3 years now. I can
pinpoint down to the minute it started. One of the first "things"
found was degeneration in my neck/spine. However, out of the literally
dozens of docs I've seen, no one has suggested that this could be
problematic. I keep asking and the responses are that everyone has
this to some extent and there's nothing to be done. I've had 2
neurosurgeries, heart surgery, and countless other painful procedures,
but no relief! Any ideas? Who is the neurosurgeon you're seeing? Both
of your daughters are fortunate to have you helping/researching/
advocating. My family's on the otherside of the country---and it seems
very removed from my situation.

Hi Kelly,
How's your posture? There's a headache specializing neurosurgeon here
who sends some tough cases that exhibit bad posture to a particular
PT. Apparently, they've had some luck relieving migraines in some
folks with bad posture by doing exercises that help correct the
posture. The way the neck bends puts pressure on nerves in the
cervical area (usually c5-c7) but straightening it out over time
releases the pressure alleviating the migraines. I don't know if all
PTs know this stuff or not.

Oh, the pain... THE PAIN...

Thanks everyone for your ideas. I'm in the DC area. I actually have
very good posture, but I sure wish it were something that easy to
fix!

My adoring boyfriend has been an amazing support to me throughout all
of this medical nightmare. I just am so anxious to get this pain and
mystery over with and behind us! I have way to many plans in life to
be "sick" for much longer ;o)

Has anyone had any experiences with the Jefferson Headache Clinic? I'm
starting to wonder if I need to find a way to bankroll an in-patient
investigation.

Howdy, Kelly!

It's worth shooting the clinic name thru the ASHM archives, as i remember
others had much to say on it.

Thanks to the meds, i can't remember WHAT they said, but clearly know that
it was discussed.

deep peace,

Hi Bob,

You need to find an upper cervical chiropractor for your daughter. They're all over the country. The only adjust C-, C-2, and C-3 and don't manipulate any other parts of the body. My wife and I have been seeing one in Santa Rosa, CA for 3 years now and have had great success with this work. Good luck. Bob
